Using an Offset to Compensate for Drift

The scenario here is that you did a quick and dirty track, largely without any interior tracker position key frames, and you'd like to animate up an offset to compensate for the drift.

Note : These features are intended for use after the underlying tracker has been completed. Attempts to use these features for intermingled tracking and offsetting probably won't go well: use one of the other workflows.

To overlay an offset on a completed (but not locked) tracker, go to the start of the tracker and turn on the Offset button. If necessary, adjust the offset position of the tracker (usually since you started there, it's OK). Go to the end of the shot and adjust the offset position of the tracker. Scrub through the shot, adding additional keys to the offset position until it tracks the correct location throughout.

To make this process a little easier, you can turn on the E (edit offset) button on the tracker panel. When on, it changes the following functionality:

- the camera view shows only the (somewhat larger) offset marker,

- dragging the mini-tracker view moves the offset,

- the Nudge keys move the tracker offsets, instead of the tracker pattern, and

- the time bar shows only keys on the offset trackers.

These changes facilitate a keyboard-based workflow for adjusting the offsets, using the nudge keys and the A and F keys to switch rapidly across the entire shot to verify that the tracker is consistently at the same location.
