Solving Tripod-Mode Shots

Tripod shots are solved using Tripod Mode on the Solver Panel. You can switch to tripod mode from a regular solve just by changing the solving mode to tripod, for example if you realize it is a tripod shot after a regular solve fails.

The solved camera will be at its original position, with animated pan, tilt, and roll.

Solving tripod shots is generally robust and straightforward, but read on for additional sections on the camera lens, 3D alignment, and solving shots with minimal numbers of trackers.

If you do additional work on the trackers, and update your existing solve, use Refine Tripod solving mode, not the plain (normal) Refine mode.

If your tripod solve has a high error, approaching 10 or larger, that might indicate lens distortion (ok, deal with it) or rolling shutter (bad) — or that the camera moved enough that you can do a 3D solve. To try that, just turn back to the normal Automatic

solving mode. You'll be asked if you want to convert the trackers from Far back to normal trackers, and you should click Yes.
