Rotoscoping

Overlays are great if the new objects are uniformly in front, but this is often not the case. If not, you must perform rotoscoping, typically in your compositing application, so that you have the isolated foreground object(s) and an alpha channel, as in the rendering-for-compositing examples above.

Rotoscoping can be especially difficult and time-consuming for detailed natural objects such as bushes and trees. For this reason, consider overlaying existing objects with new CG elements as an alternative. This is especially typical for architectural projects.
