Hey everybody, I'm wondering if anybody here has much experience in matchmoving footage where rolling shutter present -- particularly footage shot with a Canon 7D or the 5D Mark II. I'm wondering, as a college student who can't afford anything high-end that DOESN'T have a lot of rolling shutter, but yet someone who has plenty of friends all with 7Ds and 5Dmk2s, is the rolling shutter problem a show-stopping issue, or is it just something to be avoided wherever possible? I have a 3CCD camera, it's just not very good at all, and I'm sick of putting up with bad footage when I have friends who will gladly lend me their 7Ds.

I understand that as long as there isn't too much camera shake, a solution is entirely possible, but what about for more advanced shots, like if I was to do a facial mocap shot with 2 of those cameras not unlike Russ in that one facial mocap tutorial of his? Is this do-able?

Sorry I'm all over the place with this post, thanks for taking the time to read this.
Trevor

Hi GraphicsKid,

I've recently tracked a shot with very noticible rolling shutter effect. The
shot was trackable, but the solved camera always rotated to the sides
when the cam moved/rotated very fast to any side. I think you can kind
of live with it to a certain degree, but it depends what you wanna place into
the shot. In my case it was a tornado and it worked.
when you want to extend stuff (like buildings) you have no luck. you can try to mimic the shear effect in post but there's abosolutely no guarantee that it's gonna work.
use the foundry's ROLLINGSHUTTER to get rid of the shear effect, it does
a pretty good job for a reasonable price (350€ / 300pounds). I've seached
for a more priceless solution a long time, but couldn't find anything compareable to this plug-in. I've also tried to use AE's tools and work-arounds, but with no luck.

cheers, Seb.

Hmm... well I was thinking about trying to do a short that's a parody of "The Thing", basically someone's head would split open and there'd be all kinds of teeth and tentacles shooting out of it.

Obviously I'm going to try and test it out with a couple of cameras first, I'll write back here what I find.
