SynthEyes to Modo

This tutorial shows a small scene being tracked, exported to Modo, then loaded in Modo.

Notes:

  1. The tutorial is 3:19/6 MB. You can download the mp4 by right-clicking this link: SEtoModo.mp4.
  2. The source images, SynthEyes scene file, and exported Modo perl script are available for study: warehaus.zip (22 MB). Note that we used (partially stabilized) DV footage instead of HD to keep the download size acceptable.
  3. You should select trackers to export that are near where you need to do things --- the exported trackers serve as a placement reference inside Modo.
  4. The size of scenes can and should be adjusted in SynthEyes before exporting, see the manual for techniques for Coordinate System Setup.
  5. Modo uses a Y-Up coordinate system; SynthEyes is shown in Z-Up mode in this tutorial. SynthEyes handles the conversion automatically. You can set SynthEyes to Y-Up mode for an individual scene from the Edit/Scene Settings panel, or default to Y-Up for all new scenes via a preferences setting.
  6. See the manual for limitations in what kinds of backdrops Modo can display.
  7. Note that in production use, the created automatic or supervised tracks would be scrutinized carefully for problems before releasing the tracked scenes. These tutorials concentrate on the other aspects of these shots.

  9. Everything is done and shown real-time on an 8-core (16-thread) 2009 Mac Pro running 64-bit Windows Vista. The process is the same in OSX.
