'All Far' Tripod-type Stereoscopic Shots

Stereoscopic shots do not normally require that the camera physically translate, since there are already two camera views. That is only the case, however, if there are many trackable features relatively nearby to the camera rig.

If all the trackable features are far away, the same situation arises as with monocular cameras on a tripod: no depth information is available. This tutorial introduces such shots, showing how to track them and create an arbitrary interocular distance that allows CGI objects to be brought close to the cameras.

The tutorial also briefly reviews several methods of locating problematic trackers in stereoscopic shots.

Prerequisites: tutorial on automatic stereoscopic tracking.

Notes:

  1. Tutorial is 7:18 and 13.5 MB. You can download the mp4 by right-clicking this link: AllFarStereo.mp4
  2. Source imagery is 1920x1080 stereo, unfortunately would require too much bandwidth to post.
  3. Everything is done and shown real-time on an 8-core (16-thread) 2009 Mac Pro running 64-bit Windows Vista. The process is the same in OSX.
